Guard Director, Instructor positions available:  (updated 7/27/10)

Downers Grove High School, Downers Grove, IL
DGS is looking for a colorguard director, as the current director is moving. We need someone who can start in mid August. The director will be with the colorguard through band camp, and the fall show will be choreographed. The DGS colorguard has 22 members, all very motivated and hard-working. The group is young – primarily freshman and sophomores. We had a very successful first winterguard season this year and hope to continue this program for years to come.

This is a great opportunity to teach an ambitious and enthusiastic group with an incredibly supportive and organized parent booster program.

The ideal candidate would be able to teach the flag line and rifle line. They will be the main instructor and have a small budget to hire additional staff.

Ability to choreograph future winterguard and fall shows is preferred, but not a must.
We must hire someone immediately (by mid August at the absolute latest).

Marion Stamps Youth Initiative, Chicago, IL
MSYI is a non-profit youth performing arts organization based in Chicago, Illinois. Our goal is to provide fun, educational, and positive experiences for young people through the drumming, dance and color guard. We are looking to establish a quality color guard program to offer to inner city youth in the Near North/Cabrini Green community of Chicago. The groups will perform at local parades in the summer with the goal of becoming "GREAT" enough to compete in the Midwest Color Guard Circuit and WGI sanctioned events in the winter.

We are currently seeking talented individuals to join our dynamic staff for the 2010/2011 summer and winter guard seasons!

Oakville Senior High, Saint Louis, MO
Oakville is a competitive Bands of America Regional and Super Regional Finalist band who is searching for an experienced Color Guard Instructor/Choreographer for the 2010 summer and fall season. Drum Corp and/or Winterguard experience preferred but not required.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Writing weapon and flag work for our upcoming show entitled "Fields of Gold"
  • Ability to teach and clean work

Thornwood High School in South Holland is looking for a flag technician for the 2010 fall color guard season. Dance experience a huge plus.

The following skills are needed:

  • Competence in basic and intermediate flag technique
  • Ability to teach and clean flag technique
  • Basic dance technique
  • Ability to teach and clean dance technique

Applicants must be able to attend summer practices (once a week) and full band camp (end of July). Possibility of participating in the creative process. Compensation will be based on level of experience and time commitment.

Allegiance is a non-profit co-ed youth performing arts organization based in Dundee, Illinois. Our goal is to provide fun, educational, and positive experiences for young people through the art of dance and color guard. We will begin offering two independent color guard programs: Allegiance Color Guard (ages 14-22) and Allegiance "Cadets" Color Guard (ages 7-13). Morton High School, Morton, IL
Morton High School is looking for an experienced guard instructor/choreographer for the 2010 season. Our current instructor has a new addition to her family on the way, and will not be returning next year. Drum Corps or Winterguard experience is a plus, not necessarily required. Morton is located between Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.

As a growing program, it has come time to have a devoted weapon technician who can be at the majority of rehearsal. Responsibilities would include: setting weapon technique (sabre & rifle), based on the framework that has been established; cleaning show choreography; writing transitional moments and/or other phrases as asked to complete. In addition to having a strong weapon background, anyone applying for this position that has movement training is a definite plus!

We are looking for someone who would like to grow into a more chorographical based role in future seasons.

Waubonsie Valley High School, Aurora, IL  (posted 3/23/09)
Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, IL, is seeking a guard Instructor for the marching band season. A position on staff with the Winterguard season will be available as well, but will be considered separately. Both are paid positions! Those interested must possess the following skills:

  • Ability to write/teach Flag, Rifle, and Sabre work
  • Ability to clean routine on a daily basis
  • Great leadership/teaching skills

Information you should know:

  • The guard is extremely motivated. Winterguard made WGI Power Regional finals in both 2008 and 2009. We have also had great success during our past fall seasons
  • We had 43 guard members in our fall show last year
  • The guard program has more than doubled in 1 year and is continuing to grow
  • The Assistant Guard instructor has over 13 year of dance experience in addition to flag experience and is also a band director at Waubonsie
  • There are NO Administrative duties associated with this position

Niles West High School, Skokie, IL  (posted 8/11/08)
Niles West High School in Skokie, IL, is in need of a Color Guard Instructor for this coming fall. The Color Guard program has a fall and a winter season. During the fall, the color guard performs with the Marching Band, and during the winter season, they perform with the Drum Line to form a Winter Marching Ensemble. This past year, the Winter Marching Ensemble performed at the WGI Nationals in Dayton, OH.

The Color Guard Instructor must possess good communication skills with staff, students and parents. He/She must attend all rehearsals, camps, performances, and staff meetings. He/She must have the ability to choreograph dance, flag work, with minimal basics needed on all other equipment.

You do not have to commit to both seasons to be considered for this position.

William Fremd High School is seeking a Color Guard Instructor. Fremd High School is located in Palatine, Illinois - about ten minutes from Schaumburg. Our band program consists of over 300 students enrolled in four symphonic bands. The focus of our program are the symphonic bands. The FHS Wind Symphony was recently selected for the 2007 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (demonstration band), and the University of Illinois "Superstate Concert Band Festival" (2007, 2008). The FHS Bands also offer an extra-curricular marching band, two jazz bands, winter drumline, brass choir, pep bands, and various small ensembles.

The Viking Marching Band is an extra-curricular ensemble (113 musicians, 16 colorguard) that rehearses once a week in the evening in August, September, and October. The VMB competes three Saturdays during the fall at local Chicagoland area competitions and the University of Illinois "Marching Illini Festival". We pride ourselves in having a "crowd-appealing" show that is challenging, fun, and rewarding for the students and audience. The band is directed by Matthew Moore (eighth year at FHS). Drill writer for the VMB is Eric Salas, Visual Caption Head and drill writer for Impulse Drum Corps, California. Colorguard Instructor duties would include the following:

  • All flag choreography of 10 minute "West Side Story" show (all flags have been chosen and drill is currently being written)
  • 4-5 summer rehearsals to teach choreography in July (Thursdays, 4-6 pm) - *Days and times could perhaps change if needed
  • August Band Camp - Aug. 11-16 Full Camp runs 2-8 pm each day, except Saturday. The entire "West Side Story" show and pre-game shows will be taught during the camp. The "WSS" show will consist of about 55 formations throughout the 9:45 show. There are seven different flag changes in the show. The music consists of "Maria Opener", "Cool", "Maria Interlude", "I Have a Love", "Mambo", "America", "Officer Krupke" and "Finale". *Times are flexible for Colorguard Instructor
  • A "Mini-Colorguard Camp" (2-3 days) can be added if new instructor wishes to do so
  • Pay for all ("WSS" show choreography, July rehearsals, August Band Camp rehearsals) would be $1,200.00

Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Illinois is seeking a Head Color Guard Instructor for the marching and winter guard seasons. This is a paid position by the school district not band parents. If accepted, background check and fingerprinting will be expected before payment can commence. We are looking for the following skills:

  • Marching rehearsals on Monday nights 7-9 pm
  • Guard sectionals one additional day per week TBA
  • 3-4 competitions in fall

Winter Guard schedule can be more flexible with rehearsals once per week. Competitions in the IDTA circuit which begin in late January/early February. A more extensive calendar is available upon request.
